Additional Materials List For Intermediate to Advanced Painters

This list is meant to work in conjunction with the Beginners' Material List and is an addition to it. Any paints in the beginners’ list that are the same as any of the pigments below can be replaced with the corresponding pigment. This list is for those who want to delve deeper into their painting materials and are seeking the highest quality. I don’t get paid by any of the companies below; I use all of these materials in my practice and will stand by them.

PAINTS

Lemon Ochre Pigment

This is a wonderfully grainy yellow ochre. If you are new to making your own paints, be prepared because this will not be a smooth paste like the factory ground paints you are used to.

Natural Red Oxide Pigment

A beautiful blood-red iron oxide.

Titanium White Pigment

Great for mixing paint, but also for mixing into grounds to provide some opaqueness.

*Note, lead is a fantastic pigment to paint with, but is also known toxin to the human body, treat it with caution and know the risks before you use it

Flake Lead White

Stringy, semi-transparent, and just about everything good that comes with lead white!

Linen

Raw Herringbone Linen

Herringbone is such a treat to paint on. This particular herringbone from Russel and Chapple in England has a very tight weave and is relatively heavy without being super stiff. Great for small, medium, and large works.

Extra Wide Linen

This linen is 118 inches (3 meters) wide on the roll! If you have been thinking of starting something massive, here you go! No more sewing canvas together!

Stretcher Bars

Custom Stretcher Bars

I used to live a town away from these guys, so I may be a bit biased, but they are honestly the best place I have found for custom-sized stretcher bars; they will make any size you want. I usually paint on a “working” stretcher, and my paintings end up in all sorts of random sizes. These guys have always been great for the final “show” stretcher.
